LELLOW!!

Because I have lots of free time (bahahahahahahahaha!), I offered to make some custom yellow pants for a little girl who loves yellow!  Looooves yellow.  Really, the offer was honest and I offered because I love sewing cute pants, and I love the idea of sewing a collection of yellow pants.  At this point, I've made so many dresses for Raina that I feel like I should take a break before her closet starts fighting back at me with those tiny pink hangers... so a new little person to sew some things up for was just what the sewing machine ordered!

I had a brain flood of one million yellow two legged ideas.  Pockets.  Treasure pockets!  Appliques. Ruffles.  More ruffles!  Does she like ruffles?  Do I finally have an "excuse" to buy the Oliver and S Sailboat Pants pattern?!  Cuffs.  Pockets.  Must look through stash.  Must go to fabric store.  So much fun!  I love sewing pants!

I did not buy the Sailboat Pants pattern.  Boo, I know.  I decided that the patterns and pants sewing knowledge I already had were enough for now.  The Sailboat Pants require button holes, something I'm still not confident with, and this was not the time to be messing around with button holes.  (It was a time for RUFFLES!)  But I did manage pockets, a faux fly, a button loop, cuffs, a matching top, polka dots, and did I mention ruffles?  Man, I hope she likes ruffles :)

Wait, you want to see whole pants, not just pieces of pants?  Right then.

Outfit #1 is a shirt and pants SET.  What?!  Yeah, I did that.  They're made from a citrus-y cute lemon and orange print, yellow cotton, and yellow polka dot.    I scalloped the bottoms of the pant legs and the shirt, because I've always wanted to do that.  So I did.  I can check that off my sewing bucket list now! My intent was actually for the top to be totally reversible, but that didn't happen.  Way more hand sewing than I was looking for.  Plus, I wasn't sure how to handle the back button closure with it being reversible, so it's a one way shirt :).  Making it just one side also allowed me to add a cute pleat at the top with a little yellow button.

The pants can be worn solid yellow, or folded up with a cuff so you can see the citrus print lining!

Pant #2 is a print smorgasbord!  I used all the yellow prints I had on hand - the one I had the most of became the legs of the pants, and the others I patchworked to make ruffles for the bottoms of the legs.

Pant #3 is another pair of my beloved treasure pocket pants!  These pants are rad, and you're probably going to see them again and again!  The front and back panels are solid yellow, and all contrasting areas are yellow and white polka dot.  There's a fun yellow button decorating the faux fly waist.

And pant #4... ruffle pants!  Super easy.  I made Raina a purple pair that she loves.  The fabric is stretchy and so comfortable.  It's a little tricky to sew them, since you have to be sure all the ruffles are laying flat as you go.  Otherwise, they get pulled into the seams randomly and you end up with some wonkiness.  The nature of the fabric makes the waistband look a little wacky, too.  I suppose you could create a separate waistband from a jersey or cotton fabric.... but I didn't think of that til it was too late!  :)

TA-DA!

And THEN, because I noticed I had some fun and random yellow things around, I thought I'd make it all a little more fun.  A while ago, I read a post on a blog about a girl whose imaginary friend sent her a package with notes and trinkets from his travels, and how incredibly awesome it was for her to get it.  I must have stored that away somewhere, because it all came back to me... and I thought, "Wouldn't be awesome if this little lady received a surprise package of happy yellow goodness in the mail?"  YES.  It would.  (I have no memory of which of the many blogs I read this was from.  Anyone?)  Out came the paper and stickers and glitter and felt and ribbon... and I added all this fun to the mix:

A package from the yellow fairy.  How cool is that?  I hope it makes her little day!

Treasure Pockets for ME!

I'm really on a roll with this sewing for me thing!  This time, not only was I able to make something fun I can wear this summer... I also saved a pair of pants from the pile of doom in my closet known as "these used to fit me, and they're too pretty to get rid of."  It's a sad sad pile.

BUT... I had a lightbulb!  Raina's little treasure pocket pants are so cute (yep, they became Raina's... from the 12 month pattern size!).  And that bird fabric, LOVE.  So why not adapt it a little, and make it for me?

I started with pair of magenta-purple-ish linen pants from Old Navy.  The tag says they are a 2, and that little number is laughing at me.  I didn't cut it, but I wanted to.  It's nice to have it there though, reminding my 4 sizes larger self where my butt used to fit!  Babies.  They are so worth the bigger clothes.

So I cut them right up the outside leg seams, making one really funny looking pair of pant-things!  I tried them on like that for Raina, and I may have made her laugh harder than she does when Caillou's daddy gets pizza all over his face.  That's somethin'.

I took the side pocket panel pattern pieces (that's a mouthful!!) from Raina's pants, and made them longer. I used the same width and pocket size from the 12 month pattern, pinky swear!  I didn't need a SUPER wide panel, just wide enough to accommodate some leftover morning sickness-subsiding bagel baggage.  I sewed them together just like the pattern says, and then attached to to my wide open pants... just like the pattern says.

I made it really easy for myself and used the bottom edge of the sheet (that's what the bird fabric is from, if you haven't read the other couple posts where I've used it :)! )  No hemming, and easy to line up with the existing finished bottom of the pants.  I suppose if I hadn't been using a fabric with a finished edge, I would have pre-hemmed the pocket panel before sewing it to the pants.

They needed a little tweaking at the waist when I was done, since the width of the panels actually made them *TOO BIG*!  I love saying that.  I took them in a little, just curving my inside seams and then finishing them with a zig-zag stitch.

Purty!  Raina is pretty amused that we have matching pants now :)  I am, too, actually!  And I love that I got to use this bird fabric for something I can wear!  I'll try to get a decent picture of them on me to post, but I'm usually the one behind the camera, so we'll see how that goes.

I have a couple more pants awaiting this treatment right now... and I'm resisting the urge to match the panels to the tops I'm making.  I love the fabrics, but the matchy-matchy-ness of it creeps me out a little.

Kids Clothing Week Challenge: My Secret Mission

Last week was kids clothes week challenge!

I was excited, but tried not to be.  :)  Some weeks I'm super productive when it comes to sewing... but some weeks I'm lucky if I get a pattern traced and cut!  So I decided to follow KCWC in secret, just to see if I could do it.  The commitment?  One hour of kids related sewing a day for 7 days.  Seems pretty attainable... but things happen.  (Like no naps, babies pulling all nighters, spilled toddler potties, grocery store melt downs, Dora movie-thons... you get the picture!)

Somehow, though... I did it!  One hour a day, and I came away with 6 completed sewing projects, one nearly complete one, and a finished quilt that had nothing to do with kids clothes.  :)  I'm feeling pretty accomplished!

One day I spent as much time battling with my sewing machine as I spent sewing.
One day I fought with a seam ripper.
One day I sewed while a handyman played under my kitchen sink.
Many times I sewed while Lucca jumped to her heart's content in her jumperoo.
Many times I drank too much coffee and didn't sleep enough.  :)
EVERY time I was so thrilled when I was finished that it didn't matter!

(all except Lucca's Gigi dress have posts up about them... watch for the last one this week!)

It's been so much fun getting inspiration from the host blog and from the KCWC flickr pool.  I have a million and one more things I want to make now!

...and now, in the wake of all this kids sewing, I've realized that while I do loads of sewing, I've never made anything for myself!  So my next project, out here for everyone to see and call me on if I stall... is to make something for ME!  I started a pinterest board with ideas... if you have any you think I need to add, please leave me a comment!  I've got some fabric stacked, some ideas in mind... now it's time to put my nose to the sewing machine and get going!
